Random Talk | How Indonesian Eat Their Salad

Talk about Indonesia culinary is very diverse. But we, Indonesian has very different and unique way to enjoy salad different from people in other countries. The first thing that common is, we combine the salad with savory dressing. You won't find oily or sweet or sour dressing in Indonesian salad! And here, I will show you how Indonesian eat their salad.

1.       Fruit salad
Rujak
Fruit salad in Indonesia is more known as Rujak. Indonesian fruit salad has a different way to eat. Western salad usually uses ripe and sweet fruit but we Indonesian use unripe fruit such as mango, papaya and jew plum. Sometimes we also add cucumber too. Instead of adding mayonnaise or yogurt, we enjoy it with sambal which made from chili, palm sugar, tamarind juice or unripe mango. Sometimes we also add peanut to give crunchy texture and nutty flavour.  

2.       Vegetable salad
Pecel
There is so many version of Indonesian vegetable salads and various names. But there are two version vegetable salads widely know which are Gado-Gado, Pecel and Urap. We enjoy those kinds of salad without oily or mayo kind dressing. For gado-gado and pecel, we eat it with peanut sauce dressing while urap with spiced shredded coconut. 

Another thing that common from Indonesian salad is using so many spices, spices and spices. Not to mention that the taste will be quite spicy for some people. What I can say, THIS IS INDONESIA!
